Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

Biology lecturer and curriculum leader for Access to HE courses.

Typical day

I work from about 8.00am to 5.30pm. I typically start by checking my email and dealing with admin; then ensuring that my lesson equipment is set up for the day. I spend most of the day delivering teaching and in between I deal with issues and questions from the students. In any free periods or after teaching has finished, I plan, prepare resources and mark student work. Some of this is done at home on evenings or weekends.

What do I enjoy about my job?

Helping to students to achieve their goals.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

I enjoy engaging with students, passing on my enthusiasm for my subject and the pastoral aspects of the role.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

My degree and PhD in biology gave me subject knowledge and my PGCE (started) to teach me how to teach.


Career information

Brief history since leaving University

Worked for a year in a call centre.

Returned to Sheffield University and completed a PhD and a PGCE in 2005 before becoming a teacher.

I worked at Sheffield Park Academy and then Heritage Park Community School.

I then spent 3 years working in a special school for students with behavioural, emotional and social difficulties, before spending a further 2 years establishing a post-16 provision for those types of students.

Where do I see myself in the future?

I would like to teach in HE.
