Laura -
NAGPRA Collections Manager

Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

Manage the collections that are eligible for NAGPRA (Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act), includes identifying human remains, assessing ancestry, managing funerary objects, compiling reports, working with Native American tribes to establish affiliation or possible stewardship to Tribes of cultural items, host consultations, and prepare remains for reburial.

Typical day

Research a particular collection and find out it's history, pull the collection from storage, inventory the remains and funerary objects, write a report about the remains, update records into a database program.

What do I enjoy about my job?

Meeting Tribal elders and working with them.

Challenging aspects

Politics. It's difficult to balance an interest in science as research museum and the interest of Native American tribes who do not wish to have remains used for research purposes. Trying to assist in the compliance work, it can be difficult to work with some curators, professors, or other Museum professionals who do not support NAGPRA.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

I'm interested in issues of human rights and found that my skills as an osteology can help Native American communities and Museums to comply with NAGPRA.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

Archaeological methodology and theory, osteological methods including standards for aging and sexing, report writing, and knowledge of Museum best practices.

Training I receive as part of my job

NAGPRA workshops offered through NPI which helped understand the law, grant writing, and the types of funding available through the government.

My piece of advice to students
