Graduate case studies
Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.
I take part in a number of duties as part of my job. I help process donations, I embalm the donors that arrive in our facility, I help set up dissection classes and I create resources by dissecting cadaveric parts that the students use for revision purposes. I am also in charge of maintaining our large pathology collection.
There isn't really a typical day in my job. We have a number of different classes that occur throughout the week but it's likely that I may be doing an embalming first thing in the morning, which normally takes about an hour to an hour and a half. I will then help set up classes by putting the dissection tables out and then supporting the students with their practical session. Afterwards I clear everything away and may then either spend time dissecting a part or working with our pathology collection, cleaning the pots.
I genuinely enjoy every part about my job. Not one day is the same and I get to work with a wide variety of students and help them with their studies. I also get to enhance my own anatomy knowledge every day and there's always something new to learn.
It can be challenging working with the deceased as it can be hard not to get emotionalyl involved, especially if you're talking to bereaved relatives.
I have always enjoyed working with human remains, which is why I chose my Masters course. There's so much to learn from human anatomy!
September 2015- July 2017; Schools and Colleges Engagement at Sheffield Hallam University. I would work with schools and colleges and help the students with their career paths but I was focused on Sports, Biosciences and Healthcare courses.
I would like to take over the management of the Medical Teaching Unit in the future. I would also like to set up another University museum that would house our pathology collection so the public could come visit.
It would also be nice to become more involved with teaching anatomy.
Work hard! Volunteer in similar places, I spent quite a bit of time volunteering at Bart's Pathology Museum before getting my job. It's hard to get into this industry but passion and dedication shine through! Conferences are also great to attend because it allows you to network with people in similar fields.
