Graduate case studies
Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.
I work in internal communications and my main responsibilities are:
- events management and co-ordination
- photography for our publications
- writing content for our intranet
- writing content for the staff magazine
- staff engagement and building relationships across the organisation
- advising on communication strategies and drawing up plans
- film production for our website
Each day is different and I love the variety! I can be filming one day or organising a large scale event the next day!
Our organisation has almost doubled in size since I joined (and is continuing to grow!) so I love the opportunity to meet new people and develop new and exciting ways to engage and communicate with our staff.
Delivering difficult messages to staff, in particular advising them about particular communications strategies and how best to communicate their messages. This will often involve very senior members of staff.
The variety - and also being able to meet different people from across the organisation each day. I love writing and I love communicating so this job is perfect!
Good organisational skills, and the ability to effectively plan and prioritise. Most importantly though is my communication skills - both written and face-to-face - and understanding the requirements of each audience.
I've attended several courses with the CIPR and LCMJ to provide assistance with my photography, written and general communication skills. There are also several courses that are run internally - such as those that focus on IT and presentation skills.
Managed a public house for a year after leaving university under a graduate training scheme.
I started at my current place of work as an administrator.
Worked for my local council in the registry office for six months.
I see myself as a more experienced communications advisor, working with teams across the organisation and developing strategies.
Sometimes you need to start off at the very bottom and "get your foot in the door" of an organisation whose values you pro-actively support.
If you push yourself - and like me, are lucky enough to work for an organisation you really love - you can go far!
