Graduate case studies
Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.
To facilitate inward visits to the University from school and college groups that are interested in higher education. To visit schools and colleges to discuss what it's like to be a student, how to apply to University, what students can study and what they can do in their future with a degree. I also attend UCAS conventions and other HE fairs around the country promoting the University and handing out prospectuses to potential students. Finally I play a key role in arranging and running the University wide Open Days and Open House events that take place on campus throughout the year.
To be honest there isn't a typical day in this role - there is always a lot of events planning, marketing and communications work to be done through meetings with school staff and students, websites, social media and print based newsletters. As well as facilitating these events a lot of my work involves liaising with other administrative and academic departments at the University and with staff, students and the elected officers in the Students Union.
I love the travel and meeting so many different people from all around the UK
Reacting to bad press about Universities in general and helping students understand more complicated aspects of the University process like applying for, receiving and repaying their student loans
I liked the idea of being able to use my own experience as a Sheffield student and graduate to promote the University and provide information, advice and guidance to prospective students
I use a lot of communication, negotiation and time management skills in my job
I recieve lots of training on all of the different courses we offer at the University and how to promote them. I also get lots of IT and digital media training to keep up to date with changes online.
Straight after my undergraduate degree I completed a Masters in Governance and Public Policy within the Department of Politics at The University of Sheffield for which I gained a distinction.
On completion of my MA I started a full time, fixed term role with an organisation in Rotherham called Aimhigher. This role involved working with 14-19 year olds from Rotherham to promote the benefits of further and higher education.
At the end of my one year with Aimhigher I joined the National Graduate Development Programme as a trainee local government manager. I was placed with Lincolnshire County Council for this 2 year programme and during this time also studied as a part time distance learner for a Post Graduate Diploma in Local Government Management at The University of Warwick.
At the end of the graduate scheme I was kept on by Lincolnshire County Council to complete a management project in the Youth Offending Service. My role was to streamline the provision of activities used with young offenders to prevent re-offending and to re allocate budgets for these activities accordingly.
I love my current role and want to stay in this post for a while to gain more experience. I would like to progress into doing more marketing and communications work, particularly around the use of social media and I'm currently looking in to completed a CIM accredited Diploma in Marketing Communications.
I would suggest you take any opportunities that come your way - be it an internship or graduate scheme that allows you to experience lots of different areas of work in a short space of time. It might not help you decide what you do want to do in life but it will definitely help you decide what you don't enjoy.
