Graduate case studies
Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.
I started off as a project Engineer so would be responsible for maging a team of Engineers and leasing with the client to ensure various deliverables were completed on time.
To ensure I get a wide range of experience I am now working as a stress engineer.
This involves analysing various components of an Aircraft to see if they are fit for purpose.
I am usually given a component to analyse I am expected to complete a stress report within by a given deadline. This means my day can be quite flexible and it is down to me to manage my own time effectively.
The work itself is mostly computer based, using FEM software such as CATIA and completing hand calculations using excel.
I am constantly learning, whether it's understanding what a certain specific part of an aircraft actually does, or a different analysis methodology.
Completing the reports to a good standard within the timescale required by the client.
Ensuring I organsie myself so that I complete the work efficiently.
It involves problem solving and means I need to apply myself to do the job properly.
Most of the stress analysis techniques were covered during my course and even though I may have forgotten a few aspects from several years ago it gave me a foundation to easily pick up the requirements for this job.
I also use a lot of the management and project planning techniques covered during my course.
Not much formal training, but working with experienced engineers enables me to quickly pick up what I need to know.
Project Engineer at Morson Projects- Working on stress anlysis of A380 wings.
Pilkington Glass factory design.
Sellafield protype nuclear waste container design and testing
Development of bespoke accountancy software
Stress Engineer - Jet Engine Thrust Reverser Static Stress Analysis.
I am currently working towards becoming a chartered engineer with the IMechE.
Try and get as much work experience as possible before the end of your degree. Ideally take a year out in industry or work during the Summer.
I was offered a job with the company I had a summer placement with and it also helped my CV stand out.
