Graduate case studies
Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.
I am head of the Technical Section in Interfleet's Derby-based Asset Management and Maintenance Services team. We principally support train owners and operators in developing and enhancing maintenance and overhaul regimes for their fleets.
A typical day is office based. As a section we are responsible for tendering for and delivering our work. As Section Head, I oversee this allocating work to my team and ensuring that quality system and client requirements are met. I am also responsible for several development activities and contribute to the workload of the team.
The variety is great, the company and people are great, the industry is great.
Management of a team and clients always have their challenges. As many have said before, dealing with people is often the hardest!
Consultancy work is very varied. I can be juggling several different projects at the same time and sometimes not knowing exactly what I may be doing from one week - or even day - to the next.
The learning from my degree is regularly used to one extent or another. I have also undertaken many training courses in technical, commercial and project management during my time since graduation.
There are plenty of more experienced colleagues around who are always happy to provide support as required. Training courses are undertaken where relevant and the company has regular lunchtime technology briefings to learn about industry developments and emerging technologies.
Permanent with Interfleet Technology Ltd since graduation in 2007.
