Historic Site Director

Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

Education, interpretation, training, marketing, public outreach, and house and grounds maintenance.

Typical day

Walk the six acre site, adjacent to the Old North Bridge in Concord, MA, and ensure that the cultural landscape in this location where the American revolution began, is intact. Research American Transcendentalism, literature, and history as it pertains to the historic site and house where Ralph Waldo Emerson and Nathaniel Hawthorne lived. Maintain close relations with local community, and to those ends I serve on the board of directors of the Concord Chamber of Commerce. Ensure the 1769 home is structurally intact, and that its artifacts are suitably preserved.

What do I enjoy about my job?

Everything, but mainly public outreach and education.

Challenging aspects

Dealing with bureaucracy, and data entry tasks.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

Fulfills a fascination I've always had in US history and culture.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

All those acquired as a mature student at Sheffield, 1985-88.

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Persistence! Don't give in and become a lawyer. Volunteer at historic sites, museums, join public history organizations, and complete a PhD, full time or part time as it provides options in other history related fields. Publish, publish, publish.
