Graduate case studies
Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.
As Departmental Manager my role is to manage all administrative aspects of the department. This varied role includes management and leadership of all the Professional Services staff in the department; strategic policy formulation and academic planning; managing the School's budget and financial planning; managing the operational infrastructure of the School and ensuring that it supports teaching, research and administration; assisting with the management of academic staff and advising on HR issues.
My work is extremely varied, and there is no such thing as a typical day. My daily activities can range from undertaking financial planning and analysis, working with colleagues to develop and implement departmental strategy, meeting with colleagues across the department, Faculty and University on a range of matters, and providing advice and guidance on all aspects of departmental management... amongst other things!
I have completed a PGDip in Higher Education Administration which has provided me with skills directly relevant to my current post. In addition, my previous roles within the University have provided me with excellent experience to enable me to undertake this post.
