Research Facilitator and Research Contract Specialists

Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

Provide research contract support to researchers, such as drafting, reviewing and negotiating terms on a range of research contracts. Manage the university’s research output submission, support research publication statistics and outer inputs for research performance monitoring. Develop, manage, and facilitate training opportunities, such as grant writing workshops, and researcher development programs.

Typical day

Reviewing, drafting, and negotiating a research contract with a sponsor. Preparing a facilitation plan for an up-coming workshop. Supporting departments and coordinating the research output submission for university research funding and research output data collection. Preparing training programs for researchers, departments, and administrations specifics to research operations.

What do I enjoy about my job?

There is constant problem solving and detective work involved in reviewing, and negotiating a research contract. Each contact is different and i am constantly learning. I enjoy the opportunity to interact with researchers, and facilitate events.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

It was a position in research administration and management. An opportunity to learn and grow in this area.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

Knowledge of the research environment is a must; understanding the needs of a researcher and project grant, and research outputs.

Facilitation and engagement experience. Excellent communication skills. management and leadership skills.

Training I receive as part of my job

No job specific training. My knowledge for this position is primarily based in my education (BA and MPH).

Research coordinator - Occupational health and safety agency for health care in British Columbia. 2009 - 2010.

Research Assistant - Addiction and concurrent disorders research team at the Center for Health Evaluation and Outcome sciences (CHEOS). 2010.

Research Manager - Addiction and concurrent disorders research team at CHEOS & project manager at the Institute of Mental health; University of British Columbia. 2010 - 2013.

Project Manager - Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research. 2013-2014.

Project Manager - British Columbia Cancer Agency, Provincial Survivorship and Primary care program. 2015 - 2016.

Research Facilitator/ Research Contract Specialists - the University of Cambridge. 2016 - Present.

Where do I see myself in the future?

Working in a senior leadership role in a higher education institute, supporting excellent research from an operational perspective.


Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

If you are looking for a job in research, you should actively network or volunteer for the research team you are interested in to see if the research is the right area. A good publication record is an added bonus.
