Business Planning and Performance Lead

Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

1. Manage the annual planning and budgeting exercise, ie business plan (internal and external), looking at mid- to long-term strategies.

2. Manage interfaces with relevant stakeholders, ie national oil company, partners, etc.

3. Manage performance appraisals both within the Shell Group and with the National Oil Company as the aggregator

Typical day

1. Monthly business appraisals/reviews.
2. Annual performance unit reviews and benchmarking.
3. Weekly opportunity register discussions to continuously deliver/improve business performance.

What do I enjoy about my job?

Leading a team and making a difference to the people on the ground.

Challenging aspects

Managing expectations from leadership teams and aligning those with that of the National Oil Company.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

To understand the broad overview of how a global business is run at the management level which was useful given my background in refinery technical/operational experience, production planning and logistics management.

1. Business excellence through understanding the limitations.
2. Planning ahead and pre-empting worst case scenarios.

Apr 2008-Jun 2010: Refinery Lead Scheduler (Crudes / Feedstock / Units) with Shell Refining Company

Jul 2010-Jan 2014: Country Logistics Manager with Shell Eastern Petroleum Limited

Feb 2014-current: Business planning and performance lead with Sarawak Shell Berhad
