Graduate case studies
Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.
I promote sustainability programmes to staff and students.
No two days are the same! I organise and attend events on campus to promote sustainability, meet with teams, speak with students, visit halls of residence, create promotional materials, etc etc...
For 18 months after university I did a lot of temp work because I was uncertain about what career path I wanted to take. The work I did was mostly office-based admin but I knew I wanted to do something more meaningful.
In April 2009 I started working for the National Policing Improvement Agency, a Government agency funded by the Home Office and the Police. I was an Analyst, and our team worked to support analysis in police forces and provide information on potential future threats to policing. Unfortunately, the Coalition Government decided they would phase out the agency before they had found out what it actually did. This meant a huge reduction in funding and jobs, so when my contract ended in January 2011 there was no money to renew it.
I had always wanted to travel but took a while to pluck up the courage to do it on my own. I knew that if I didn't do it then I may not have had the right chance again for a long time. I spent 7 months exploring the world, before returning in late 2011.
In March 2012 I moved to London and for 2 1/2 years worked in online/social media analysis roles. In 2014 I then decided to complete an MSc in Environmental Sustainability, and graduated in 2015. I now work at the University of Essex, promoting sustainability programmes and generally raising the profile of social and environmental responsibility.
I would like to work my way up to being a Sustainability Manager or Consultant, managing and advising on ways to reduce organisations' environmental impacts.
Get experience where you can, get involved in extra-curricular activities and make the most of the opportunities that are out there.
