Consultant Medical Oncologist

Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

Medical treatment of primary bone and soft tissue tumours (sarcomas), and testicular cancer.

Typical day

Seeing patients on the ward and outpatient clinics. Teaching medical students and supervising junior doctors. Research and publication. Clinical governance activities.

What do I enjoy about my job?

To see my patients being cured of cancer, and for those with incurable cancer, to see them living longer and their symptoms improved.

Challenging aspects

Heavy workload, emotionally demanding, underfunding of the NHS.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

I enjoy using my scientific and clinical skills to help people diagnosed with cancer.

Career information

Brief history since leaving University

Basic medical training at hospitals in Sheffield and London (2003 - 2007).

Obtained postgraduate medical qualification, ie MRCP(UK) (2006).

PhD at Queen Mary University of London (funded by the Medical Research Council Clinical Research Training Fellowship) (2007 - 2010).

Specialty Training in Medical Oncology in the East of England (2010 - 2014), with additional training at the Cancer Research UK Centre for Drug Development, London (2014). Obtained Certificate of Completion of Training (2014).

Consultant Medical Oncologist at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (2015 - present).

Where do I see myself in the future?

To become the clinical lead for sarcoma and testicular cancer services in Cambridge.


Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Spend time on clinical attachment and get advice from senior health professionals to make sure this is what you really want to do.

Work hard but aim to achieve a good work-life balance.

Always look for opportunities to improve yourself.
