Justin -
Sustainability Manager

Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

Sustainable Investment/ ESG (Environmental, social and governance ).

Typical day

Dealing with client request and work on client solutions, partner with industry bodies across Europe to form best sustainable investment best practices, attend conferences, write policy papers, industry scoping.

What do I enjoy about my job?

1. Being able to make a positive impact to the world and influence others to take them on similar journey.

2. The work variety. There are some standard tasks that everyone has to do, but there are a huge variety of different work that we can get involved.

3. Working with the smartest and the brightest. There is so much to learn from people, and always being curious and ask questions at the right time has never wrong.

Challenging aspects

1. Time pressure - It is a very fast environment. When I was asked to do something, the deadline usually is yesterday. So it is vital to be able to prioritize and produce quality work within a short period of time

2. People - I had to learn how the business is structure, and hence how to communicate effectively with people. My priorities are not other people's priorities and it is key to get people's 'buy-in' , else nothing ever gets done.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

1. Building a better world - I strongly believed in doing what I enjoy doing while be able to add value for the future world through sustainable investment.

2. The challenge - There is a lot to learn in investment and connecting with the real world. It is about how do you invest for a better future

3. Living in the city - I always wanted to live in the capital city and London is a great place to live. It is very vibrant and diverse. People are very open and you meet people from all walks of life.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

1. Communication skills - I find it vital to be able to get my ideas across to people, to get people's buy in and for people to trust me. My final year in university taught me this, when we had to do a group project with a doctor from the hospital. We had to be able to communicate our ideas and project to the medical doctor, helping him understand the systems that we built for him.

2. Problem solving skills - What engineers usually do best is solving problems. And this is a vital skill that I find it quite useful at work.

Training I receive as part of my job

There was 3 weeks training to introduce all the graduates to banking.
The 3 weeks was to teach us what banking is, the financial products, project management and most importantly networking skills.
In the job itself, every line of business has their own training to get their new joiners up to speed with the products and business.

On top of that, I sat for two professional exams, one being the Investment Management Certificate and the other being the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA).

Career information

Brief history since leaving University

Where do I see myself in the future?

Continue to build expertise in sustainable investment, build out our client solution and being able to contribute to solving the world key issues

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

1. Do what you will enjoy. Don't get driven by money even though that is important.

2. Be curious and find out all the career options are out there. Speak to recruiters / friends / family and the university.

3. Make sure you build up the soft skills when you are in the university through clubs, societies, projects and work experience. What you learn in the classroom forms the foundation for you, but to stand out from the crowd, you need to have soft skills.
