Senior International Officer - India
About the job

Main responsibilities

I am currently a Senior International Officer within the International Recruitment, Relations and Global Opportunities team at the University of Liverpool. My main responsibilities include managing the recruitment, operations, and marketing for the university in India.

Typical day

A typical day in my job includes strategising the university's international recruitment plans in India by managing relationships with educational agents, school counsellors and prospective students. I also work around marketing ideas for building the university's brand in the Indian region and also provide operational as well as market intelligence support to the wider International Recruitment team at the University of Liverpool.

What do I enjoy about my job?

I have always enjoyed a job which offers diversity in terms of areas of responsibility. The international aspect of my job, relationship management, guiding and mentoring students to carve their career paths, and opportunities for professional development are definitely the most enjoyable aspects of my job.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

During my time in Sheffield as part of the HRM course, I developed a keen interest in the field of Work Psychology, and after graduating and returning to India, I secured my first job as a University Placement Advisor and School Counsellor at an International school in India. From there began my journey of exploring the Education Management sector - making it my preferred career path, and moving from counselling to recruitment and management, thereby doing justice to my postgraduate education.

Career information

Brief history since leaving University

My first job right after graduating from Sheffield in 2016 was as a University Placement Advisor and School Counsellor at an IB school in India, which basically introduced me to the Higher Education sector. I gained a lot of on the job training and exposure to various opportunities within the HigherEd market to develop my skill sets and relevant knowledge. From there I moved on to working with St. Stephen's College, University of Delhi in 2019, as their Alumni and External Relations Manager, which provided me with some quintessential relationship building and management skills along with an introduction to digital marketing and strategy. Combining all these skills along with an overall work experience of almost five years, I finally joined the University of Liverpool earlier this year in 2021, as a Senior International Officer in their newly initiated India Office based out of Delhi, India.

Where do I see myself in the future?

I see myself growing within the Higher Education Management sector in the next few years to come. There's a lot of scope for career advancement which includes both personal and professional development. Moreover, despite the pandemic, the international education sector has continued to flourish, establish its relevance, and has emerged as a strong sector. Qualifications wise, I intend to perhaps do an MBA sometime in the near future, but as of now I am contented with my educational achievements.

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

My advice to students considering a career in Human Resource Management would be to look beyond the obvious. Of course, the field of HR offers a range of opportunities within diverse sub-areas, and the first and foremost career option for most graduates is entering the corporate world. However, I would recommend that HR as a career can be explored within the most unexpected sectors. I had never imagined entering the education sector to put my knowledge into practice, but here I am five years hence, enjoying my job! Therefore, be open to ideas, opportunities, and perspectives.
