Ioanna -
Lecturer of Data Science
About the job

Main responsibilities

I am mainly developing material and delivering teaching for level 3-7 modules.

Typical day

I am usually teaching 2-3 days a week, but it can vary. The rest of the time I am engaging in CPD, doing research, marking assignments or developing teaching and assessment materials.

What do I enjoy about my job?

Interacting with different people from all walks of life.

Challenging aspects

Like with most other jobs, COVID has introduced new challenges (and opportunities). All of our teaching has moved online and that comes with a host of technical and classroom management challenges.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

I have always been interested in teaching. I enjoy explaining complex concepts in simple terms and encourage others to grow both inside and outside the classroom.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

I have used most of the skills I was taught in my Masters, such as R, Python, Hadoop (Spark) etc.

Career information

Brief history since leaving University

After graduating I was quickly headhunted by an education start-up (https://decoded.com/) and started working as a Data Mentor. My job involved 1-2-1 data coaching and helping with programming queries, as well as developing content for the company's online platform. Through my work I have consolidated my Python, SQL and Spark knowledge, attended international conferences and had the chance to work with world-leading Data Science specialists. More recently I was employed as a Data Science Lecturer by BPP. As part of my role I am teaching level 3 up to postgraduate level modules and I am assisting with content development.

Where do I see myself in the future?

I am considering coming back to the University for a PhD (part-time).
