Tech Academy Graduate (Software Engineer)

Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

At work I spend 20% of my time working towards a Masters in Digital and Technology Solutions and the rest of my time working within squad providing enhancements to the SBG site. At SBG there is a focus on Agile Development, meaning we work in small sprints to enhance our product. For me this is an ideal way of working as everyday is different with new challenges. As a role of a software developer I spend my time learning from others and working with a variety of different coding languages (mainly Javascript).

Typical day

Typically day to day, we have a stand up in which we discuss and move tickets on a kanban board. A ticket is a task or a user-story which is pointed in order to correspond to the effort that it will take to complete. SBG is a very collaborative work place thus between working on your tickets it is important to liaise with other team members from UX design, testers and Product Owners.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

I think it is important to note that studying an English Degree supplies you with an abundance of transferable skills. Before I started working with SBG my coding knowledge was minimal, and it is a brilliant scheme as they train you up from a beginners level! An English degree provides you with great analytical skills and teamwork from discussions in seminars, which have all proven useful within this career.
