Manager - Country Requirement Engineer

Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

Align with China marketing department and translate the general requirement to technical specification concerning interior and exterior.
Work together with module leader to design better concepts for China market.

Typical day

In the morning: Telco with China marketing colleagues. They tell me that in future cars they would like to have a more convenient place to store their smart phones. It needs to have good visibility, reach-ability and with wireless charging function.
I note all the key topics and cluster them into a presentation. Run CATIA, locate the current design of the car interior and the geometry of BMW wireless charging module. Then find 3 possible positions to fit the wireless charging module (e.g. center console, dashboard, seat etc...).
I make my quick design for each solution, present the requirement and solution in the technical round in the afternoon with German engineers. We discuss the pro and con of each solution, in the end we decide which solution to take and ask for approval from marketing.
If the solution is approved, the relevant engineers and designers car continue working on the parts.

What do I enjoy about my job?

I really enjoy that I could help our German colleagues to create better solution for China, which is now the biggest market for BMW. I delivery solutions. Every time our new car is launched and I hear Chinese customers appreciate our product, I'm proud of it.

Challenging aspects

The main challenge is always to find a balance between several factores - money, time and business case.
However, thanks for the University of Sheffield offering business course also to engineering students, I've learned a lot about it and in most of the time able to solve the conflict.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

This job is appeal to me because I'm able to fully use my knowledge about China market/customer and mechanical engineering (which I have learned from the University of Sheffield). Additionally I always keeping learning new things from this job.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

Mechanical engineering (including CAD, machine design, material)
English (reading, writing, speaking and listening). This is very important part of presentation skill, especially for me as a foreigner.

Career information

Brief history since leaving University

2011-2012: Internship in MINI UK, Bracknell. Supported the MINI Roadster launch, London Olympic sponsorship and new MINI UK dealer network building.
2012-2016: Specialist and Assistant Manager in BMW China R&D, requirement management interior and exterior. BMW internal qualification E/E level 2 and BMW elite driving license level 2.
2016 until now: Expat in BMW AG, Munich, Germany. Manager of China requirement Interior/Exterior. German qualification B2+.

Where do I see myself in the future?

My next step of career plan is to join the autonomous driving department in BMW. By doing this I'm able to expand my knowledge to highly autonomous driving, including sensor and radar technology.
I think autonomous driving is the future of car industry. So I would like to follow the trend.

My piece of advice to students

Know exactly what do you like/love. So you can have enough passion to work on them. Passive working will never lead to real success, but passion can.
