MSc Finance
About the qualification

Why do this course?

I could still remember the time I studied in Sheffield and we did a project called “Engineering you're hired” where we met professionals from augmented reality industry and pitched our designs to them. This triggered my interest in the TMT industry, which is becoming my career plan. I applied to the MSc Finance course at UCL to equip me with a solid finance knowledge to work in investment banking. The courses like ‘corporate finance’, ‘financial mathematics’ can absolutely provide me with unique technical skills. And optional modules like ‘mergers, divestment & IPO Analysis’ helps me have a better understanding of the work in investment banking.

Career information

Brief history since leaving University

MSc Finance at UCL from 23/09/2018-23/09/2019

Where do I see myself in the future?

Now I’m studying MSc Finance at UCL I am willing to find an investment bank job back in China. As the competition is fierce, my bottom line is to start my career in financial industry and try move to investment bank after accumulating some professional experience. After two years of working, I would try to come bank to the UK for an MBA and try to further develop my career. I wish I could work at TMT group of an investment bank in Hong Kong and then after that apply my knowledge from both EEE and finance in an industry.

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Do preparation earlier. If you are not from a finance background like me and wish to change your major during a master course, you should use the support from our excellent teaching staff in Sheffield and your free time during your undergraduate to prepare. You should try to do internships in the financial industry as earlier as possible. This is because the competition in financial industry is fierce and experience is as important as technical knowledge. Study for a masters will be much busier than undergraduate, it will be better to make a good use of your spare time during undergraduate to prepare for your future career.

Other comments

It’s an amazing experience to study at EEE in Sheffield and it will influence your whole life. If you want to be an engineer in the future, EEE at Sheffield can give you both technical knowledge and practical experience to achieve that. If you are not sure about your career plan, EEE at Sheffield will give you enough freedom and support to explore your future and it’s always helpful to gain some programming skills and hardware knowledge which can be helpful whatever you do in the future. Simply, stop considering and hope to see you in Sheffield soon.
