Graduate case studies
Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.
My team are responsible for GT (Grand Touring) cars at Aston Martin and ensuring the commercial and product development teams are supported in delivering new models and product updates
A typical day for me is to work in cross functional reviews to ensure each area can support my vehicle programmes, each area has a list of deliverables to support a big checkpoint event known as a programme gateway, we help to collate the different working areas into a cohesive status of the vehicles development. I work to ensure the programmes are delivered to cost, quality and time constraints.
Every day is different and the pace of new car development is very high so I am always grappling with a new problem and trying to involve the right people and the right data to made decisions and overcome challenges in designing, engineering, and marketing an Aston Martin
I would say the biggest challenge is in asking the right questions to understand where to take things next, whether that is understanding a countries new legislation, or understanding what features we should develop for a new car, it's really important to ask the right questions of the market, the technology, and the data around us to make the right decisions.
Interrogating the data around what we've done before and thinking deeply about how we can tell the story of Aston Martin with how we design our cars is something I always try to keep in mind.
As an engineer I was always drawn to more "big picture" work and this role allows me to see a wide range of the business, as well as work with senior staff that as an engineering graduate I would never have had contact with.
My exposure to Formula Student taught me so much about developing cars from project management point of view, and the MSc at Sheffield with an industrial management portion really showed me a huge array of tools that I still use all the time to deliver the next generation of Aston Martin.
Beyond my MSc I am pursuing Chartership as an engineer and following a formal project management qualification with APM (association of project managers)
Since I graduated from Sheffield I have been working at Aston Martin Lagonda on DB11 and DBS vehicle programmes,
I helped launch the DB11 V8, the Convertible known as Volante, and the DB11 AMR (Aston martin racing), we recently launched the DBS the companies flagship model capable of 211mph while maintaining supreme driver comfort and luxury.
Future qualifications I am aiming for is the APM project management qualifications. I'm 25 now, I think by the time I am 30 I will be looking at doing an MBA to further enhance my business skills.
In future I would like to progress within my department to more and more responsibility for the vehicle line.
The key qualities that I think has helped me is tenacity and inquisitiveness.
Being driven to find the right answers and using the right analysis or tools is really critical, as well as being honest, if someone asks you something, don't be afraid to say you don't know, but always be open to saying that you will find out the answer together as a team.
On being inquisitive I think it's important to always understand why something is the way it is, and why you are doing whatever it is you are striving for, embedding a mission driven culture is so important, and then being able to put things into context and make connections across different areas of a business really help you make progress.
I would say my time at Sheffield really helped round out my management and business skills and put me in a really good position to take on my current role.
