Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

Responsible for the engineering design of track renewals and enhancements across the South West and Wales

Typical day

Undertaking engineering design activity using specialist CAD software. Delegating tasks to assistant engineers. Attending project meetings to ensure designs are integrated across all the specialist engineering disciplines.

What do I enjoy about my job?

I enjoy the technical challenge of designing a railway alignment. It feels a bit like solving a jigsaw puzzle. I gain satisfaction from contributing to the development of the railway network.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

Logical development of prior roles and I enjoy the work.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

General mathematical and engineering principles from degree (MechEng MEng). Work experience developed over the last few years for specialist railway engineering knowledge.
