PhD Biological Sciences
About the qualification

Why do this course?

Biology is my subject of interest and towards the end of my degree I started to explore the world of computational biology, so a PhD project with a significant bioinformatics component was ideal.

Career information

Brief history since leaving University

I finished uni in 2014 and took a bit of time out, working part-time in a local pub/restaurant while applying for PhD programmes. I started my PhD in 2015 and I'm just coming to the end of it now.

Where do I see myself in the future?

Once I finish the PhD this September, I'll be looking to get a bioinformatics position somewhere, possibly a post-doc project. This is a growing field with plenty of opportunities so I'm optimistic that I'll find something that suits me.

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

If you're going to do a PhD, I think it's really important to have a good think about the project you're applying to do. It's also worth remembering that postgraduate research is a training position, so make sure you're up for taking any training opportunities that come your way, even if they don't seem perfectly relevant to the project you're doing right now!
