Global Event Manager

Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

I am the Event Manager for our Asian Pacific events. I am responsible for International venue negotiation, management and fulfilment of contracts.
Event budget management and forecasting. Client liaison and onsite fulfilment of sponsorship packages including exhibition booths, arranging workshops and facilitating 1-2-1 meetings. I travel to and oversee all of our Chinese/Singapore events.

Typical day

I have weekly tasks lists that ensure the timeline up to the event stays on track. This includes liaising with venue contacts, sponsors and other team members. It's a lot of admin, formatting documents, emails and team meetings!

What do I enjoy about my job?

I really enjoy the travel, and working in a buzzing London office with lots of like-minded young people.

Challenging aspects

I work for a startup so got the opportunity to take on extra responsibility early in my career. There is a lot of pressure to deliver in all aspects, and with events it's very obvious when something goes a little bit wrong! The to-do lists tend to pile up, especially as an event draws near and it can feel a little overwhelming at some points.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

I really enjoy all areas of organisation and product delivery. I enjoy working closely with other people and like seeing an idea through from inception to delivery. Event management is the perfect combination of all of those.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

Certainly the skills gained from studying history that I use everyday is the ability to take on a lot of information and formulate it into a reasoned, well balanced argument. I have to be decisive and self-assured (in the workplace) and I think history definitely helped with this. Time management learned at university has also come into play at work - balancing essay submissions, presentations, seminar readings, extra curricular (in my case lots of netball), and raging Roar and/or Poptarts hangovers are all very applicable to real life!

Career information

Brief history since leaving University

I have been working at the Innovation Enterprise since graduating in 2017. I first worked as a Delegate Sales Executive, selling passes to our events, before moving into Event Management.

Where do I see myself in the future?

I really enjoy the fast paced nature of working in events and can see myself continuing in this long term. I would love to maybe move into the charitable sector and work on fundraisers.

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Don't underestimate your capabilities. Look at the wider skills you gained from undergraduate study in history/humanities. It's an incredibly versatile qualification, that is incredibly useful in business. Sell yourself - you will have more life experience than an engineer who had to lock themselves in the library for 4 years!

Other comments

Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about getting into the event sector - I would be happy to help if I can!
