Graduate case studies
Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.
I work as a consultant editor. Various departments within the United Nations ESCAP contact me when they have a report to publish. I work primarily on copy editing and making sure that the writing, word usage, layout of tables and graphs and format of references are all in accordance with the UN Editorial Manual. I am sometimes asked to write their Executive Summaries and Forewords as well.
I work from home. It is a consultancy position, so when I have a report to work on, I'm working 8 hours a day and when I have submitted, then I'm free! ...until I am contacted again.
Since I graduated from Sheffield, I began studying the UN Editorial Manual. That took me 6 months to complete. I then applied for their rostered editor position and all the paper work etc. took another 6 months.
I plan to gain as much editing experience as I can through various reports from various departments. In a few years I will attempt to give the UN editing exam which will certify me as an editor and I can then apply to work as a full-time UN employee in the Editorial Department.
