Senior Caseworker

Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

Providing emotional support for victims. Providing practical support by helping them rebuild their lives in the UK for them and their children. Empowering them and helping them to become independent and be able to access the help and support they need.

Typical day

There is never a typical day in this job. I manage a caseload of clients as well as supporting the Manchester sub team of caseworkers, as I am the senior. One day I could be at the Home Office, the next I could be at a children's play group! We aim to go above and beyond for our clients, whatever they need help with, we help. But the main aspects are, ensuring they are in safe and secure housing, getting them access to all medical services, accessing counselling and mental health support, reporting their trafficking to the police, applying for compensation, helping with their immigration status and getting legal advice, as well as connected them to support groups for them and their children.

What do I enjoy about my job?

I love how varied the job is. There is no day that is the same. I also love being in outreach, this means I can manage my own caseload and time, and gives me the flexibility of working.

Challenging aspects

It is an emotional job. Our clients have been through very traumatic experiences, ones which I cannot even begin to imagine how they feel. But the organisation is amazing at making sure we are okay, and we have a lot of support if we need it.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

I absolutely love my job, I love working with my clients and seeing them turn their lives around. We work with clients for a long time, and we get to see them grow and develop as a person. I find it a real privilege to work with my clients and be a part of their journey in overcoming their trauma and rebuilding their lives.

Career information

Brief history since leaving University

I did a degree in Geography and then completed my MA. I did a lot of charity work. I worked for a sex workers charity that provided nightly outreach, I have done homeless outreach at night. I completed International Citizen Service with the Department for International Development. I also do a lot of online UN Volunteering. I did all of these throughout my degree and MA in my spare time.

Where do I see myself in the future?

I love working and helping people. I have a passion for getting the care and support victims of modern slavery/human trafficking they deserve. I see myself still advocating for their rights in the UK and also supporting refugees. I love working for a charity so see myself working on more international projects that are tackling human trafficking.
