Leanne -
EAL Coach

Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

I am responsible for a group of year 7 and a group of year 9 students who come from various countries. Their English skills are not yet good enough to be able to access the full mainstream curriculum so they are extracted from most subjects to receive intensive English language lessons in the EAL (English as an Additional Language) department.

Typical day

I usually teach four lessons a day to different groups of EAL students. In between, I plan lessons and create materials, track students' progress, assist with extra-curricular activities and do interventions with small groups of students. I also teach after school sessions to an unaccompanied asylum seeking minor.

What do I enjoy about my job?

The best part of the job is seeing the students make progress, especially those who have been through very difficult experiences and/or arrived in the UK unable to speak a word of English or to read and write their home language.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

I have a keen interest in languages and enjoy teaching others.

Career information

Brief history since leaving University

After graduating, I spent a year working as an English Language Assistant in Switzerland through the British Council (August 2016 - June 2017)

I then went to Budapest to get my CELTA qualification (September 2017)

Where do I see myself in the future?

I am planning to gain a few more years' teaching experience and then take DELTA. After that I would potentially be looking for a more senior role, or would consider moving into teacher training.
