Alice -
Director of Fundraising and Supporters
About the job

Main responsibilities

I am responsible for all the income generation for the party so we can fund our vital campaigns and run in elections. I also lead the team responsible for growing, strengthening and diversifying our member and supporter base.

Typical day

Every day is different but it is usually filled with checking in with my team, ensuring they are clear on the work they're doing and that they feel empowered to do it and have all the resources they need. I'll also have meetings with various internal and external stakeholder teams and ensure I'm up to date with the latest campaigns so I can communicate these to donors as compelling propositions. I'll also be reaching out to prospects, ensuring they are cultivated and stewarded effectively to increase income.

What do I enjoy about my job?

Working with a diverse range of people and teams, and doing it for such an amazing cause!

Challenging aspects

Career information

Brief history since leaving University

I left University in 2009 and took a job at the Office for National Statistics as a website editor. I worked there for 15 months whilst also working in a pub at weekends and in the evenings to save up to go travelling. I then went around the world (solo!) from Sept 2010 - Feb 2011. When I returned to the UK I did a 3 month unpaid internship with the Yes to Fairer Votes Campaign (which campaigned for the UK electoral system to change to AV). I then got a job at the University of Portsmouth Students' Union as their Volunteering Coordinator, managing student volunteering and fundraising. I did that for 2 years and then made the move to CRUK and London to work in their volunteering team, organising conferences and award ceremonies. After 16 months I made the move to fundraising, progressed within that team for 5 years. In January 2020 I made the move to the political sector and joined the Women's Equality Party in my current role.

Where do I see myself in the future?

I don't have a properly laid out career plan as the last 18 months have shown, life is unpredictable! As long as I'm helping a cause I care about whilst ensuring its supporters feel like they're having an impact then I'll be happy!

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Don't underestimate the "softer" skills - i.e. relationship building, influencing, how you communicate etc. How you come across to people is incredibly important. You may be good at what you do but if people don't enjoy working with you, or respect you, then you will struggle to get recognition and progress.
