Ciaran -
Trainee Quality Engineer

Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

As a physics graduate with an interest in data, the projects I get given are often chosen to suit me. A good portion of my week involves analysis of data to aide process improvement and increase the productivity and quality of our output in the factory.

I am currently involved with a number of longer term projects. This includes the installation of a large data monitoring system in one of our departments to track process parameters and help increase the productivity and quality of the casting process.

Typical day

Alongside larger projects, I also spend a couple of days a week with ongoing tasks. This includes helping to maintain the quality management system, conduct audits and validations and provide quality engineering support for our products.

Career information

Brief history since leaving University

I graduated in July 2017, went home to Wales, had time off and travelled a bit until September 2017. I then moved back to Sheffield when I started at Orchid and I've been here since.

Where do I see myself in the future?

I'm very curious and I love to learn new things, having had a year away from education I can see myself going back to university and studying for a masters either part time or full time in the future.

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

I would say Physics gives you a wide range of skills and opportunities. I know people that I graduated with that are now working in all sorts of interesting areas from teaching to web design.
