Graduate case studies
As a graduate/junior engineer, my main responsibilities are to undergo 4 to 6-month long placements at various places on site (ironmaking, steelmaking, projects, etc).
These placements are tailored to what I want out of my career, and objectives are set before starting as a measure of success. Completing these objectives/projects are essentially the main things I do here.
Manage work-parties, establish projects to be done (maintenance or improvement), propose projects, attend meetings (budgetary/progress), read standards and ensure the project works to it, Excel, emails, looking through engineering drawings, etc.
I am a fresh graduate with very little to no experience before getting this role - I graduated with a 2:1 in MEng in Mechanical Engineering in 2016.
More details in my LinkedIn profile.
My next career goal is achieving charteredship in 4 years. British Steel is one of many companies that have a framework to assist in this, and I plan on making full use of it.
Confidence is key! You cannot work on this site without confidence to ask questions, confidence to go on site, and confidence to talk to managers.
If you are going for interviews, make sure to mention any safety related experience you may have, as well as any project management experience you may have. (EYH and Global Engineering Challenge work too, so use it!)
It can be quite messy working on a site like this, so if you are a neat freak, be prepared!
And last, but not least, make sure you enjoy learning! Always be open to learning things, and it may lead you down a career path that you will not expect.
If you are going for an interview, google how steel is made! Also, this site is BIG, so a car/bicycle is preferable.
Also British Steel is a Tier 2 Visa sponsor, and were willing to pay for my visa fees.
