About the qualification

Why do this course?

The course content appealed to me as well as the multidisciplinary approach of the School of Engineering in Durham, that embraced all disciplined of engineering in addition to working with the Department of Chemistry. The location appealed to me so did the university ranking of DU.

About the job

Main responsibilities

Customer facing role in both bar work DJ-ing and during teaching I oversaw lab experiments and assisted students with their tasks

Typical day

Bar work would involve preparing the bar and stock, then serving customers then latterly closing the bar and re-stocking. During Dj'ing I would help set up the dance floor and my DJ booth, eventually at times also helping with closing the night by removing equipment. Teaching would involve ensuring all students were registered for the lab session, then walking them through their experiments, H&S and then ensuring they would carry out the experiments in expeditious manner. A week later i would mark their lab reports and also answer their questions and give them feedback.

Career information

Brief history since leaving University

After leaving Sheffield Uni with a 2.1 honours degree, I worked in heavy industry in Bristol for three years, then taking some time out to travel and study, eventually earning a research funded position at Durham Uni.

Where do I see myself in the future?

I'd like to work full time in engineering, it's taking me to many places and I've met many new people. I enjoy working in teams and see it as my vocation. relationships have suffered but always somehow come out beaming after a hard days work.

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Maths. Maths. Maths. You can only blag your way so much in engineering, if the numbers don't add up, then you have to think double quick.
