Graduate case studies
Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.
I'm responsible for the end to end management of all Mallow & Marsh products. From new and current product development, quality assurance, managing the factory relationship, packaging buying, all the way to overseeing the logistics to make sure it all makes it to shelf.
There is no real typical day for me. We are a very small company and my responsibilities are so varied that every day is different. I manage two people so we have individual catch ups once a week. I might spend a day working on new products we are developing. Or I may be trying to problem solve logistics issues with our supply chain manager. I go to the factory once a month to catch up with the production team.
I love the variety and the fast pace of my job. My team is also very close knit which I love. Plus as many marshmallows as I want!
Being part of such a small team does mean that there is a lot of pressure and nowhere to hide when things go wrong. Also being part of a start up does mean that you are paid less for the level of responsibility you have compared to your peers at the big corporates.
I wanted to work for a start up as I like seeing the impact of my work and contributing to the success of a team. I love food and it seemed like the right industry for me.
No real qualifications.
Most of my job is really project management and being able to juggle tasks effectively.
After Uni I went straight to Broadoak Management (a property management company) and worked there for a year. I then took 3 months out to watch the Olympics and travel a little. I then got an internship at a chewing gum company called Peppersmith. I ended up working there for almost 4 years before joining Mallow & Marsh.
I think that I will be with Mallow & Marsh for the next few years as we grow and hopefully bring out new products.
End goal at some point is to set up my own bar/cafe/deli and make it a place people love to go to.
While my choice of degree did not directly impact my job now I would say my time at university massively did. I grew a lot in maturity and developed my project management skills while juggling the dual honours aspects. I loved being part of the university hockey club and helping to run it and I think this made me realise that start ups were the area I wanted to go into.
