Eleanor -
Marketing and Communications Manager

Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

Direct mail campaigns, social advertising, email campaigns

Typical day

Thinking of ideas for campaigns to promote the development programmes I look after, briefing these ideas into the creative team with different outputs for different marketing channels, setting up these campaigns across relevant platforms and analysing their impact.

What do I enjoy about my job?

The ownership of being responsible for campaigns and whether they do well or not - putting a variety of skills to the test to see what works and what doesn't, and changing things depending on that.

Challenging aspects

Getting everyone to agree!

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

I am very interested in improving education and have worked in education comms since I left university. The charity sector appeals because my job helps to improve the quality of education in England without making any money from it.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

Language and communication skills - particularly linguistics for compiling the company style-guide and editing content.

Career information

Brief history since leaving University

I worked for a teacher training company developing day courses and conferences for teachers for 2.5 years, then left to go travelling and complete an MA.

Where do I see myself in the future?

I would like to be a director in the education sector.

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Don't be put off by the word marketing or think you have to have a degree in marketing. It allows you to communicate your creative ideas to an audience, and if you do it in the charity sector it allows you to build advertising campaigns that actually make a difference to people's lives.
