Commercial Manager

Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

Lead the Commercial team on a complex and challenging contract in partnership with the MoD. I have to ensure that Boeing's commercial position is protected and maintained whilst also meeting our financial targets, both through my team and my own work.

Typical day

Lots of meetings, customer engagement and meeting tight timescales.

What do I enjoy about my job?

Very fast paced work so you see genuine results and you can have an impact on the projects.

Challenging aspects

There can be high pressure situations and you need to keep you head.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

To be honest I never intended to work in a Commercial role or in the Aerospace industry. I just fell into it and haven't really looked back.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

Lots of understanding of contracts; being able to influence, persuade and lead people; negotiate & win business and being able to explain complex problems in a simple manner.

Career information

Brief history since leaving University

After a few minor jobs once I left university, I worked for BAE Systems for 7 years, working my way up the Commercial grades and developing myself, before I was seconded to Eurofighter (BAE is a partner) in Munich, Germany for 3 years. This was a great experience and I would highly recommend taking any expat opportunities. At the end of my secondment I left BAE to take up an opportunity with Boeing.

I am a qualified Project Manager through PMI and also accredited by the Association of Cost Engineers that is a world known Commercial body.

Where do I see myself in the future?

Boeing have given me the opportunity to take my Masters which I am currently debating whether to do. It would be time consuming but could be worthwhile. I also intend to get some further Commercial accreditation through IACCM which is recognised worldwide.

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

There are few psychology careers and they can involve much learning and further education. It is not an easy profession to get into. But it can be hugely rewarding. Always bear this in mind. Remember your degree shows your aptitude in lots of ways, not just in ones linked to your course.
