Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

Overseeing operations in UK, Singapore and USA, developing technologies and bringing them to a commercial reality. Dealing with suppliers, partners and customers. making sure there is enough money in the bank to realise our goals!

Typical day

Patents, collaborations, recruitment, finances, operations, manufacturing, QA/QC, device specs etc etc etc all aspects of running the business!

What do I enjoy about my job?

The people and drive to make our products work. Working with other organisations to deliver the product globally, travelling to customers, partners and suppliers around the world. Working with some very smart scientists, engineers and business minded folk.

Challenging aspects

Timelines and expansion!
The rapidly changing environment means it is hard to settle into one aspect of the role. You have to embrace a changing mentality to every aspect of the job.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

I have helped build the company form the ground up and so my role changes with the growth of the company. From 3 people in a two man office and not a penny to rub against another, to 85 people and bespoke offices and labs, £35million raised and looking to perhaps float in the next couple of years.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

Negotiation, scientific understandings, dealing with problems, working with and building teams. Presenting, sourcing finance, pitching, planning.

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Take chances and don't be afraid to move, adapt, and re-focus.
You never really know if you will like doing what you do until you do it, and generally when you are doing it, you might not realise you like it! Working hard is enjoyable for me, but you rarely take time to appreciate your achievements.
