Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

Doing pre-hire background checks on our hires. Creating/maintaining our background checking policy. Administering employee stock options.

Typical day

Helping our employees with HR related questions. Administering pre-hire background checks via our service provider and doing some myself manually. Creating stock options contracts/administering the statuses. Participating in our global/local HR meetings.

What do I enjoy about my job?

Human contact. Being able to solve problems. Learning new things.

Challenging aspects

Understanding options related taxation regulations in all the different countries we operate.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

It's connected with law/compliance (my degree) and is very international due to the nature of our company - being borderless. It has its challanges and I get to learn something new every day.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

English/Estonian languages on a daily basis, law degree, experience gained from working in Customer Support, excel/word.


Career information

Brief history since leaving University

Did a Masters degree in International Relations in Tallinn University of Technology 2012-2015. Did an Erasmus semester in Germany in 2014.
Worked as a lawyer in the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for a year during my master studies. Was unemployed the first half of 2015. Joined TransferWise Customer Support team in September 2015. Changed my position to HR Compliance Specialist in January 2017.

Where do I see myself in the future?

At the moment I see myself staying with TransferWise as I believe in the organisation's mission to create a better financial world. I have no immediate plans of changing my position.


Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Make sure you like what you study. If you don't enjoy it to the fullest be brave and change course. Find something else to study. These days the world is full of opportunities and there's no point in wasting your life and time on something you don't enjoy.
