Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

Play a key role in projects as a senior designer.
Lead projects that are medium to large in size: responsible for financial management of the project, ensuring key deadlines are met and that the project stays on schedule and staff are working together effectively.
Develop landscape design plans in response to technical problems posed by a project’s scope. Develop innovative solutions to problems.
Serve as a technical design expert to the project, but generally work through staff to develop and execute design.
Independently evaluate, select, and apply standard landscape architecture techniques, procedures, and criteria, using judgment in making minor adaptations and modifications on projects.
Manage the presentation and report development for clients.
Play a key role in client management and client satisfaction.
Lead marketing efforts to current clients and is instrumental in identifying and attracting new clients.

Typical day

Morning: go to office at 9:30, check emails and discussion with project team members;
Lunch break from 12:30-14:00;
Afternoon: main working time on projects, sometimes attend office training;
Leaving office at 19:30, OT if there is a deadline rush.

Challenging aspects

Handle difficult clients.
In China all projects move into construction and sometimes clients will be quite demanding and request design work to be finished in a very shot times. So how to deal with clients' request is challenging.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

many opportunities to try new things; good working environments and reasonable salary.

Waterfront regeneration competition (2011-2012);

Shopping mall landscape design: concept - schematic design (2012);
Green belt ecological restoration and landscape design: concept (2012-2013).

Where do I see myself in the future?

As in China there is no National register system for landscape architects, currently I am taking national exam for Level 1 Licensed Architect (highest level for architect in China mainland) for future development in architectural design and integrated design.
