Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

I provide SEO services for a range of our agency's clients, focusing on improving the quality of their websites and overall online presence by implementing digital marketing strategies.

Typical day

- Content writing: Writing optimised page content for new and existing websites, alongside press releases and blog articles.
- Website auditing and editing: making sure a client's website is following good SEO practices and editing content, images, and formatting.
- Content outreach: writing blog posts and similar content to place on authoritative and reputable websites on behalf of a client.
- Link building: placing optimised and relevant links to a client's website online to build their online presence and increase traffic.
- Research: researching a client's company and industry, their existing online presence, and keywords we can target for them in Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs).
- Meeting with clients: discussing a client's goals and suggesting the SEO strategies needed to reach them.

What do I enjoy about my job?

I love seeing how the changes I am implementing affect the overall search engine rankings of the client, then measuring up where we can target next.

Challenging aspects

Working with a variety of clients has required becoming very adaptable to what I am working on from day to day; I make sure to be thorough and take notes to ensure there are no loose ends or forgotten tasks. This is also something I enjoy about agency work as no two days are the same.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

My time as a section editor at Forge Press really kick-started my interest in writing and blogging; going into content writing was a logical step for my experiences in writing and marketing, though I hadn't consciously planned to go into digital marketing before this.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

The writing skills I developed during University as a student and journalist are what prompted me to go down this career path; since then, I have learned a lot about SEO, PPC, and social media marketing, these aspects of the job definitely appealing to the analyst and researcher in me!

I also completed a marketing placement with the Archaeology Department while completing my MA at the University of Sheffield, which provided me with invaluable experience for applying to marketing-related jobs, as did my work placement module, which involved marketing the University's creative writing magazine Route 57.

Career information

Brief history since leaving University

Content Writer, Adel Professional (September 2015 - April 2016).
Content Marketer and Social Media Manager, Supersede Media (April 2016 - February 2017).
Digital Marketing Strategist, Bigfoot Digital (March 2017 - Present).

Where do I see myself in the future?

I'm really enjoying my current role and am looking forward to seeing where it takes me as our company expands. I am also interested in pursuing PhD study in mental health linguistics, as I am very passionate about language and mental health advocacy, but feel that experience in the working world will be very valuable and am wanting to build up this experience.

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

A lot of people have writing experience and in some cases this is more than enough to start in an entry digital marketing position, but knowing about SEO really will give you an edge. I was lucky enough to be trained in this in my internship and first job out of University, which helped me then land an agency position.
