Data Analyst and Software Developer

Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

I am a member of the technical team responsible to deliver analytics and to develop the software.

Typical day

Revise the tasks in hand, determine the order of priority if not dictated by the client, develop the analytical tool to solve the task. The development phase requires continuous interactions with other team members and with the customer.

What do I enjoy about my job?

The variety of the work and the number of possibilities for career development: technical lead, business analyst, project manager etc. It is also extremely satisfying to see your work adopted and used by leading industries in their respective sectors.

Challenging aspects

Specifically in my case, because I come from a biological background, I have some catching up to do in best practices in software developments and analytics. All of this needs to be done in a time-efficient manner in order to meet the job deadlines.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

It is a very dynamic working environment. At the office we constantly face new challenges and learn new skills. The learning is not limited to new programming languages, but it also extends to other domains of science. As an example, my background is in biology, however in my job I had the chance to apply my knowledge to other fields such as chemistry or renewable energy, and to learn how companies operating in those domains work.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

Problem solving, flexible approach to work, communication skills, programming skills and data analysis skills.


Career information

Brief history since leaving University

From April 2014 to September 2016 I worked as a research assistant in Prof. Battaglia lab at UCL, Chemistry Department. In October 2016 I joined Tessella as an associate data analyst and software developer.

Where do I see myself in the future?

Keep working in data analysis and software development, gradually taking more responsibility towards project management.
