Assistant Director

Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

From marketing to finance, tutoring to sales, this role is a multifaceted one. As an Assistant Director you are a manager from day one and take over a range of responsibilities. I lead a number of areas in the business including finance, external marketing and our school programme within the centre.

Typical day

A typical day in the life of an assistant director - well there isn't one! With each day comes a different variety of activities. My morning is normally filled with school assemblies, preparing parents meetings, running finance reports and general admin. As soon as 3 o'clock strikes our 'show time' begins, or rather the point at which our lovely members start arriving for their sessions. During show time I can assume a number of responsibilities from sales and coaching, appointments or compering. Essentially, I am either mentoring my tutor team or holding taster sessions, conducting parents meetings or running show time.

No two days are the same and this is why I love my job; variety, challenge and most importantly working to develop and inspire fearless learners!

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

I have been able to apply my teaching background within a dynamic, challenging and exciting environment. I started within the company as a tutor and from there I knew that I had found the niche in education that I had been looking for. Explore Learning offers continued CPD opportunities and progression within the company, and I am excited to see where this career takes me.

Career information

Brief history since leaving University

Since graduating in 2011 I have had roles in both the public and private sector. In 2012, I worked for the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham as an Assistant Technical officer making oncology treatment. From here, I began a short spell working as a QA laboratory technician for Juice Burst before being made redundant. Following this redundancy I then re-evaluated my career path and applied to do a PGCE in secondary science at the University of Wolverhampton, qualifying as a secondary science teacher in 2015. It was only in my second year of teaching that I decided to pursue an alternative route in education, and that takes me to the present day and my exciting new journey as an Assistant Director at Explore Learning.

Where do I see myself in the future?

In the next year, I aim to become a Centre Director overseeing my own centre and team. I am excited to develop in my current role but I am looking forward to working towards this next step.
