Diksha -
Product Editor

Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

I am responsible for writing new product descriptions (which go onto the website as part of online sales). In addition to this, I write blogs for the website based on different topics from product to brand launches and healthy eating and exercise.

Typical day

A typical busy day would include writing anywhere between 20 and 50 product descriptions, some of which are repeat products can be traced on the website and others that need to be researched.
Additionally, I have assisted the content writing and developers team in coming up with a QA plan of action to standardise all processes across the website.

What do I enjoy about my job?

Writing! It fuels me!

Challenging aspects

Since it is a creative role, I am sometimes faced with writer's block. The challenge lies in finding inspiration to kickstart your brain into writing something fresh... but usually, I do my best to ensure that the mental block isn't prolonged.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

Writing has always been a passion, and I am fortunate enough to be able to express myself well in person and on paper. This led me to take up writing first as a copywriter at a media agency and then as a product editor as SSS.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

I come from a marketing background, and wanted to work in communications. However, I knew that writing involved being able to communicate even the most technical information with ease and I am glad to have been able to do so.

Career information

Brief history since leaving University

I started out as an Admin Assistant at a publishing firm in 2012 and realised I was looking for a challenge. I then interned at a social media firm in the summer of 2013, but was not retained as the company wasn't looking to hire.
For a couple of years, I stayed away from building on a career as I had some personal strife that needed to be dealt with. In May 2015, I joined a local media agency and worked with several well-known international and local companies, assisting the team on social media content creation, press releases and creating content strategies.
I began my role at Sun & Sand Sports in April 2017 after exiting the media agency in January 2017.

Where do I see myself in the future?

At the moment, I am in the process of exiting my current role as I am moving to India by August after getting married. I do plan to work in the future and maybe consider a role in corporate communications and brand marketing, should I find the right fit (company and profile).

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

The courses are very interesting and if the lecturers and tutors are the same, then the course becomes all the more fun. I still have fond memories from my time at Sheffield - both academically and otherwise. My advice: Just give it your best shot with a whole lot of focus. I worked really hard on my dissertation and I missed a Distinction by 1% and that really pinched! The material is challenging yet fun - so it should really be a course you enjoy at the end of the day!

Other comments

The University of Sheffield is a great school that fosters an amazing learning environment. The facilities, the tutors, the material that is shared over internal portals and email is really helpful. The faculty are amazing - I don't think there is a lecturer that I didn't love. Aside from the academics, Sheffield is your quintessential student city - if I went back in time, I wouldn't change a thing about my experiences! :-)
