Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

Main responsibilities

Teacher and head of literacy

Typical day

Teaching 11-16 year olds, dealing with behaviour issues, GCSEs exam marking, implementing teaching and learning strategies across the school specifically focused on improving levels of literacy

What do I enjoy about my job?

Seeing pupils achieve. Looking at experimental teaching methods and trailing them.

Challenging aspects

Work load is the main issue particularly marking.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

I love studying English and as a teacher I can continue with it. I also relate will to young people.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

My English degree from Sheffield and teacher training qualification


Career information

Brief history since leaving University

Worked as a receptionist in London and then in educational publishing. Then taught English as a foreign language for a year in Thailand, and then moved back to Manchester to become a teacher.

Where do I see myself in the future?

I plan to become a lead practitioner to keep my focus on improving teaching and learning in school.


Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

I would advise them to do as much work experience as possible and speak to other teachers. It's a fantastic job but hard work.
