Philip -
Senior Director

Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

I oversee project teams consisting of 4-10 colleagues that work on qualitative, quantitative, and consulting projects for clients. Many of our studies are global in nature, so there's a lot of logistics and planning in the project management, and working with our offices in NY, London, and LA. I'm also responsible for maintaining and growing key client accounts, as well as writing proposals and pitches for new business.

Typical day

The variety of tasks we undertake is huge, and each project is different in terms of the objectives, audience, and countries or cities involved, and we work across genres and platforms.

Challenging aspects

The biggest challenges are around the complexities of project management and juggling different project timelines. It’s also a very fast paced environment with deadlines and objectives constantly shifting.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

The work provides an important bridge between content creators and marketers and the people that consume it. I enjoy the variety of the tasks involved, and being able to bring creativity and analytical/technical skills. I also enjoy the travel, getting to go to different countries around the world, and work from different places around the world. The media industry is also experiencing great upheaval with changes in digital distribution, so it’s an exciting time to be involved.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

Project management.
Presenting/communications– client presentations, pitches, leading team meetings.
People management.
Analytical skills.
Written communications – writing reports, surveys, discussion guides
Creative/data visualisation skills.

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Market Research is an industry that myself and many others fell into rather than actively sought out or were aware of in University. It would be great if it had greater visibility. It’s a career that has many opportunities and provides experience across many different sectors and companies.
