Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

Answer legal questions from colleagues and clients about lettings
Draw up tenancy agreements and other contracts/notices
Setting up new properties online/brochures etc
Office management - tech/stationery
Training new staff/interviewing

Typical day

Everything and anything that comes up - dealing with a range of issues both legally and technical, drawing up tenancy agreements and making brochures, replying to emails and taking calls from clients.

What do I enjoy about my job?

I now work from home in Sheffield despite the company being located in London
Love to train new members of staff and teach legal aspects of lettings

Challenging aspects

Learning lettings legislation (am now ARLA qualified)
Dealing with difficult landlords and tenants
Current work load is substantially increased due to other admin staff leaving

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

Wanted to move to London and my friend got me an interview
Love doing admin!

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

ARLA qualified & general legal knowledge
High level of IT skill
Ridiculous level of attention to detail

Brief history since leaving University

Sainsbury's December 2008 to July 2012 - started while at uni part time, worked up from Customer Service Assistant to Team Leader to Deputy Manager
Centre Coordinator and Party Host and Monkey Bizness July 2012 to April 2013
riverhomes April 2013 to now - worked up from Administrator to Office Manager to Head of Administration / PA to the Directors
2014 - ARLA Residential Lettings and Property Management Technical Award

Where do I see myself in the future?

Really have no idea! Might consider a complete change of pace and start my own art shop.


Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

When I was younger I always worried about how I was going to decide what job I would have, and I never really decided it just happened. If I had gone into Biochemistry I would have had to make a more proactive commitment to finding a job and a career though.
