Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

Design the piping systems including stress analysis for onshore and offshore oil refineries - for clients such as BP and Statoil.

Typical day

Designing on a PC - then going on site for commissioning.
Client meetings and team meetings to track progress.

What do I enjoy about my job?

The technical challenge and client facing role.

Challenging aspects

Thrown in at the deep end - have to learn quite a lot and fast.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

Oil & Gas is a very fun industry - up and down but technically very challenging.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

Degree but on the job learning.


Career information

Brief history since leaving University

I have been on the graduate scheme since 2013, working towards IMechE chartership.

I have also sat the CFA IMC exams for finance and investments.

After Chartership and the 4 year grad rotation scheme, I plan to remain as a Senior Engineer.

Where do I see myself in the future?

Senior Engineer or moving into Project Engineering.

Become a Chartered Engineer and Fellow IMechE member.


Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Enjoy it - make sure you enjoy what you study as it is crucial.

Engineering is also an incredibly versatile career path - with several avenues.
