Graduate case studies
Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.
I advise banks and issuers (mainly corporates) on all matters relating to the initial public offering of shares, capital increases (rights issues), equity-linked financial instruments and all obligations following the admission of the securities on the stock exchange.
I do not have typical days as the matters of the day often unfold on the day itself and are not planned in advance. Typical activities involve drafting securities prospectuses, agreements, and all transaction related publications. Often I participate in telephone conferences with all parties including the other side's counsel.
I enjoy the variety the job has to offer. In addition to the legal work it does involve a lot of project managing as well as communicating clearly with clients, colleagues and third parties. I also appreciate the wide range of responsibilty associates are entrusted with from day one.
The long hours and the uncertainty as to your daily schedule can be tiresome at times.
Since the financial crisis in 2008/2009 I have developed a strong interest in capital markets and find that it is a very interesting and relevant field of work.
In my opinion an excellent legal knowledge is fundamental. Apart from that time management ability, concentration and communication skills are key.
After leaving the University of Sheffield I returned to my native Germany and did my mandatory legal practice course qualifying as a German Rechtsanwalt (attorney-at-law) and began working at a magic circle firm in Frankfurt, Germany following a set of colleagues after one year to join an American competitor also in Frankfurt, Germany.
While I believe that everyone's professional career is exposed to a fair share of chance my long-term goal is to make partner or alternatively become self-employed.
Students should make use of the wide range unviversity life has to offer. They should go abroad during their course if they have the opportunity to do so. Furthermore, students should also look beyond their subjects and find a good balance between having fun (especially in the first year(s)) and a strong focus on achieving outstanding academic results.
