CV Assistant
About the job

Main responsibilities

I run 20 minute appointments with clients to help them improve their CVs and cover letters before applying for jobs or further study. My aim is to not only help my clients get a job or a place on a course, but also to teach clients what makes a good application.

Typical day

The 20 minute appointments are booked back-to-back, which requires excellent time management. I have to build rapport with clients, but also give them any advice they need. I can also refer clients to additional services, such as the Jobshop. My appointments can be very varied in the goals and the needs of the clients, making my job very interesting.

Career information

Brief history since leaving University

During my PhD I was also a Graduate Teaching Assistant for the Achieve More: Health Challenge module. I gained valuable teaching experience by facilitating discussions between students.

Where do I see myself in the future?

I hope to pursue a career in medical writing, as I have found during my PhD that I really enjoy communicating science to others.

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Find a project you are passionate about and make sure you understand the research the lab is undertaking by reading previous articles the research group has published. Feel free to contact the head of the research group to ask about a PhD that has been advertised, or possible future vacancies.

Some PhDs will offer an MSc as part of your first year - this is a good option if you want to build your confidence within the lab. Sometimes the first year of your PhD can be spent rotating within different research groups, which is also a good way to learn lab skills and meet potential colleagues before starting a project.

During your PhD try as many things as possible. Not every PhD will end in a career in academia, so exposing yourself to different careers will increase your employability and you may even find your dream job.
