Business Graduate

Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

Creating and developing business proposals to drive revenue and align the business to the clients needs. This includes research, commercial knowledge, pricing and liaising with the client.

Supporting the bid team and marketing departments- ensuring our new brand and value proposition is well placed in the market and well understood by clients and competitors.

Developing a marketing strategy for a new start-up business within the company. Analysing researching, developing a strategic pipeline of events and finance solutions.

Typical day

Each day is different. I have written a bid for a multi million pound contract which involved strict deadlines and in-depth knowledge of our capabilities as a business; looking at past contracts and future abilities.

I work closely with the marketing team to continually develop our approach to the market and create a brand which is well known and well recognised. I have created marketing collateral and assisted with events and conferences.

Beyond my day to day role, I am involved with volunteering at local schools, becoming a member of our gender equality board and creating an event for current and past graduates to develop their skills within the business.

What do I enjoy about my job?

What I enjoy the most is the responsibility I was given from day one of my first placement. I had complete exposure to senior management and the department I was working in. Rather than an isolated role, I was involved with live projects from bid writing, to management and marketing. This has resulted in me gaining robust knowledge about the wider business and its' objectives.

Challenging aspects

The most challenging aspects of the job is getting to grips with such a large business and the many industries we work in. Understanding what each department does and drawing upon resources has been particularly challenging but equally has opened my eyes to our capabilities and resources.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

This area of work appealed to me as I wanted a broad management role that would expose me to a large FTSE 250 business that would equip me with the relevant skills, opportunities and networks to excel my business career. I wanted a business that was involved with large, corporate contracts and I felt that with Mitie's reputation and support network that this was the right fit.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

In my current role I have drawn upon both my educational experience and work experience. From project management to analytics to research, my role encompasses a wide range of skills that I utilise daily.

Career information

Brief history since leaving University

On completing my MSc at Sheffield, I worked in B2B marketing as an assistant and as a co-coordinator. I then went travelling for three months across Asia, Australia and New Zealand before securing a new role.

A graduate scheme always appealed to me as I really appreciated the rotational nature of the schemes. I wanted a broad business/management scheme that allowed me to see different elements of a business and get involved with different roles.

Where do I see myself in the future?

In the future I hope to further develop my career with Mitie and progress in management and analytics. I look forward to managing people and contracts and build upon my networking along the way.

Following in the footsteps of past graduates, I hope to study for PRINCE2 and CIMA Certificate in Business Accounting.

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

My advice would be to utilise as much work experience as possible and maintain a can-do attitude with every task given to you.

Keep your options open and be flexible to work in different locations and business areas- you never know what opportunities they could hold!
