Hannah -
RAF Musician

Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

I perform at concerts and ceremonial occasions with the Central Band of the Royal Air Force.

Typical day

On a typical day rehearsals start at 9am and go on through to the early afternoon with plenty of tea breaks. Other responsibilities relate to the smooth running of our department and concerts/parades. I am currently in charge of CD sales which is a great opportunity to meet the public at concerts.
We often travel to events and working hours often revolve around this, so no day is exactly the same!

What do I enjoy about my job?

I love rehearsing and performing a huge variety of music with such talented musicians. Taking part in ceremonial events such as the Festival of Remembrance at the Albert Hall and the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace are especially exciting.

Challenging aspects

Every member of the RAF has to complete basic training which is 10 weeks long, and fitness must be maintained throughout your career. Sometimes travelling to distant events means working at unsociable hours.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

The opportunity to be paid (well) to play music is a fantastic one, and being part of the military offers financial security as well as excellent health care and support for every part of life. The band were extremely welcoming and encouraging when I visited.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

All of my musical skills as well as communication and computing.

Training I receive as part of my job

Continuing Professional Development courses are mandatory for promotion, developing our musical abilities as well as leadership skills. We are also required to keep up to date with training relating to our military role.

Career information

Brief history since leaving University

I began basic training after the summer when I graduated and have worked for the RAF since then.

Where do I see myself in the future?

I hope to remain in the Central Band as long as possible and would like to take advantage of their Enhanced Learning Credits which could fund future qualifications such as a Masters or Degree.

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Anyone who is interested should arrange to visit the Central Band to see our day to day life or visit their local Armed Forces Careers Office to find out more.

Other comments

If I can get through basic training anyone can - don't let that put you off!
