About the job

Main responsibilities

My role involves project management in multi-million projects. I am also a Highways Agency nominated health and safety officer on large projects.

Typical day

Monitoring cost, time quality as well as health and safety in large projects. Management of tenders and contracts. Planning, scheduling and resourcing. Managing teams and contractors.

What do I enjoy about my job?

Working with a variety of professionals of different backgrounds and cultures. Managing successfully challenging public projects.

Challenging aspects

Effectively managing a large group of stakeholders in complex public projects. Managing and collaborating with contractors and handling contractual issues and negotiations.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

Project management is a demanding environment which requires leadership attributes, creative thinking and problem solving skills.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

Leadership skills, problem solving, creative thinking, ability to perform and deliver a quality outcome under pressure.

Training I receive as part of my job

Management and leadership training as well as health and safety.

Brief history since leaving University

This was my first job since I graduated from my MSc course at Sheffield.

APMP Certificate, IOSH CDM and IOSH Managing Safely Certificate, Management of Risk Foundation and Practitioner

Where do I see myself in the future?

In a senior management role either in the Public Sector or in the Industry. Undertake an MBA in the near future. Progress to APM Practitioner and Registered Professional qualifications.


Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Focus in an area of interest. Make targeted and well prepared applications instead of multiple of less quality. Job seeking is a job by itself. Do not comprimise. Have a vision and follow it.
