Ellen -
Local Fundraising Manager

Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

I work with individuals, groups and companies to raise funds for cancer research.

Typical day

One of the great things about my job is that there is no real typical day. Sometimes I will be in the office answering emails and making phone calls, other days I will be planning events from home, or driving to various places across Birmingham to meet with supporters or attend events. I also work with local committees and secure corporate partnerships.

What do I enjoy about my job?

I enjoy meeting different people who want to support Cancer Research UK, finding out why they have chosen us, what they want to do, and helping them make it a reality. It's great to see someone's event really come together and the sense of achievement people feel when they end up smashing their original fundraising target.

Challenging aspects

It is a very busy role which frequently requires work outside of office hours.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

I knew I wanted to do something that helps people and involves meeting and working with new people regularly.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

The role requires a degree and full driving licence. Skills I have to use day to day include: confidence, persuasion, passion, enthusiasm, time management, organisation, being an excellent listener and communicator, creativity, analytical skills, the ability to inspire others.

Training I receive as part of my job

Membership to the Institute of Fundraising, internal training sessions throughout the year, and some external courses including First Aid and an Introductory Certificate in Fundraising.

Career information

Brief history since leaving University

Community Fundraising intern with Birmingham St Mary's Hospice - I went straight from university into this five month internship, working three days a week on their annual big bucket collection event.

Events Assistant for Cancer Research UK - I spent my weekends over summer 2013 working on Race for Life events in various locations across the North region, managing the volunteers, setting up the course and helping to ensure the days ran smoothly.

Regional Fundraiser for Diabetes UK - I was responsible for a variety of fundraising activities for the West Midlands region, including community, events, trusts, and corporate.

Where do I see myself in the future?

I would like to keep working in the charity sector, possibly moving over to events and then onto a management role. I want to gain further fundraising qualifications through the Institute of Fundraising.

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Make the most of your time at university. There are so many opportunities available to you, just keep trying things and get as much experience as you can in as many areas as you can.

I came to university with no clear idea of what I wanted to do afterwards but once I started working for the Alumni Fund, did some volunteer work and became Head of Fundraising for Platform society, I realised I wanted to go into the charity sector. Because of the variety of experience I had and the skills learned through those roles and other activities I engaged in during my time at Sheffield, I secured an internship for as soon as I graduated and went straight from that into a paid full time fundraising role.
